Applications of Foam Tapes & Pads

Medical Industry
Foam tapes enhance infectious disease containment (IDC) equipment, which is especially beneficial in the medical field. They can be used to pad, seal, and insulate items such as splash guards and face masks.

Vehicle Industry
Acrylic foam tape with dual sides is ideal for securely fastening body edges and curves. It adheres strongly to various surfaces, including paint and external car parts. Because the body and external components expand and contract differently due to thermal changes, foam tape is effective in distributing stress. It also plays a significant role in noise reduction and providing watertight sealing for external trims.

Solar Industry
In the solar industry, foam tapes are used to bond components such as module back beams and concentrators that must endure harsh conditions. The quick-bonding capability of foam tape allows for fast and reliable assembly without compromising quality or requiring extensive curing time.

Gasketing
Foam tape is commonly utilized as gasketing tape. Adhesive-coated foam tapes act as compressible sealants to close gaps between machine parts or around pipe joints, preventing gas, fluid, air, or sound from escaping. Applications include sealing garage doors, shed doors, and electrical enclosures.

Weatherstripping Uses
Foam tape is often used for weatherstripping applications. It is typically applied along doors and windows to keep cold air out during the winter and hot air out during the summer. Foam tape effectively fills gaps where seals around windows or doors are inadequate, providing a reliable, long-lasting, and cost-effective alternative to replacements.

Appliances
Foam tape simplifies the process of fixing translucent or transparent decorative panels on home appliances. Its invisible bonding ensures a clean appearance, absorbs vibrations to minimize noise, and provides strong adhesion to surfaces with low surface energy, such as plastics.

Wind Energy
In the wind energy sector, foam tapes are used to join exterior components of wind blades, such as deflectors and serrated trailing edges. Foam adhesives help reduce assembly times and enhance blade processing in factories.

Electronic Products
Double-sided foam tape is ideal for bonding touch screens, windows, and backplanes on electronic devices like smartphones and tablets. With the increasing popularity of narrow bezel designs, foam tape ensures that cover glass remains securely attached, protecting against impact forces from drops and collisions.

Transportation
Foam tape is effective for assembling parts in the ceilings, walls, and floors of trains, high-speed rail, and airplanes. It enables secure and compliant fastening according to established standards.

Architecture
Foam tape helps improve energy efficiency by preventing moisture and drafts from entering the interiors of a building. It plays an important role in sealing windows, doors, and even insulation gaps.

Types of Foam Tapes & Pads

Single-Sided Foam Tape
Single-sided foam tape is typically used for sealing and anti-slip purposes. Easy to cut to size and apply, it makes a strong solution for a range of install environments. Single-sided types are also ideal for use when the surface of the material is uneven, or when shrinkage or expansion may occur.

Double-Sided Foam Tape
Double-sided foam tape has many different uses, including mounting and bonding. It can also be used for sealing, depending on the requirements of the product. More than one strip can provide a quick yet effective way to bond two irregular materials together. It is also ideal for environments where temperature variations are common, as well as for working with materials that have different rates of expansion under these circumstances.

PVC Foam Tape
PVC foam tape offers a reliable and chemically-stable adhesive solution. It is available in a variety of lengths, widths, and thicknesses.

Silicone Foam Tape
Silicone foam tape offers a strong, consistent bond and can be applied to a wide variety of different materials.

PE Foam Tape
PE foam tape is ideal for dampening sound and vibration, as well as compensating for materials expanding or contracting at different rates.

Acrylic Foam Tape
Flexible and elastic, acrylic adhesive makes for a highly versatile solution. It is high strength and offers long-term durability.

How to Use Foam Tape

Foam tape is easy to apply to a wide variety of substrates. While the exact application methods may vary depending on what you’re assembling, you can follow these basic guidelines:
Clean and prepare the surface. Tape will perform best on a clean, dry, smooth surface. If applying tape in a dirty or greasy environment, use an appropriate solvent to remove any residue from the surface before applying the tape, and make sure it is fully dry.

Cut the tape to size. Or better yet, work with AFP to get custom foam tape that is already the precise size you need for your application.

Peel the backing. If you’re using double-sided foam tape, remove the release liner to expose the adhesive. Position the tape in place, then press it down and remove the release liner on the other side.

Apply pressure and let it set. To aid adhesion, ensure there is sufficient surface contact between the substrates. While setting times can vary depending on the tape, you will want to let the adhesive cure before applying pressure to the component.

FAQ

Q: What is your production lead time?

A: Delivery time is 7-15 days after order and deposit confirmation.

Q: Do you offer OEM, ODM, and custom services?

A: Yes, we support OEM and ODM services, such as printing your logo on release paper, plastic or paper cores, or packaging cartons, and we support cutting into various shapes and sizes.

Q: What are your payment methods?

A: We typically accept wire transfers, irrevocable limited liability companies. For regular orders, we prefer a 30% deposit before production and the balance before delivery. (We accept third-party inspections before delivery.)

Q: What kind of packaging do you provide?

A: Our products are packed in plastic bags for inner packaging, cartons for outer packaging, and plastic sheets or sheets for support panels. Custom packaging is also available.

Q: Is foam tape waterproof?

A: Some types are waterproof, but not all varieties have these properties, so you will need to check the material and the manufacturer’s instructions for confirmation. Waterproof foam tape will feature a closed-cell material construction, as this type is most effective when it comes to waterproofing requirements.
Waterproof foam tape is ideally suited to construction applications including roofing and sealing letterbox, door and window frames. This is because tape applied in exterior environments must be able to cope with changeable weather and temperature fluctuations experienced throughout the year.

Q: How to remove double-sided foam tape?

A: Understanding how to remove foam tape and learning the best way to remove double-sided foam tape will largely depend on the application and the type of material where it has been applied. For instance, if the tape is on a wall, the simplest way to remove stubborn double-sided foam tape is to apply localised heat to the tape. This should then work to remove the glue residue and make the tape much easier to peel away from the wall.

Q: How does expanding foam tape work?

A: Expanding foam tape is a soft, flexible product which works similarly to standard tape types. However, the key difference is that when the tape is removed on the foam side, it expands out to a certain distance. This tape is primarily used in domestic properties for at-home construction. It is primarily used as a sealant and is ideally suited to application in uneven or difficult to access areas thanks to its flexibility and easy to shape characteristics.

Q: How does foam tape work?

A: Foam tapes are pressure-sensitive adhesives (psas) that allow for quick applications with immediate handling strength. They can be either single-coated or double-coated, but each tape is comprised of a release liner, adhesive, and foam carrier.
