Standard Handling Methods For Electrical Insulating Tape

 

 

Preparation
Before use, check that the tape is within its expiration date and that the surface is free of damage, hardening, or loss of adhesion. Select the appropriate type (e.g., high-temperature resistant or oil-resistant) based on the ambient working temperature. Ensure your hands are dry and clean to avoid grease that may affect the adhesive bond.

 

Wrapping Steps

  • Preparing the joint: Use wire strippers to remove the wire insulation, exposing an appropriate amount of conductor. Tighten the joint to ensure a secure connection.
  • Base Wrapping: Starting at the end of the joint, tightly wrap one to two layers of insulating tape at a 45° angle, covering the exposed conductor and extending to the edge of the original insulation. The edge width should be at least 1/2 the width of the tape.
  • Main insulation layer: Wrap 2-3 layers of tape evenly perpendicular to the conductor axis, overlapping each layer by approximately 1/2 the tape width. Maintain moderate tension (the tape should be wrinkle-free and stretch-free). For high-voltage connectors, increase the number of layers to 5 or more.
  • Finishing treatment: Wrap the last layer back around the conductor and press the tape against the starting end to ensure no curling.

 

Precautions
Do not use directly on wet or oily surfaces. Clean and dry the tape if necessary.

Avoid applying tape that is too loose (easy to peel) or too tight (causing breakage).

For multi-strand connectors, it is recommended to pre-treat with heat shrink tubing before wrapping the tape.

Inspect the tape regularly for aging and replace any cracking or discoloration.

Proper handling of insulating tape can effectively prevent electrical leakage and extend the life of the wiring. Operators must strictly follow electrical safety regulations and ensure that each step meets technical standards.
