To ensure reliability and long-term performance, automotive wire harness tapes must be stored and applied correctly. Improper handling can lead to poor adhesion, reduced insulation, and even harness failure. Here's a quick guide to best practices for tape use during harness production.
1. Storage Conditions
Tapes should be stored at 20–22°C and 50% relative humidity. Keep rolls flat in their original packaging, away from direct sunlight or strong artificial light, and at least 20 cm above the floor to prevent moisture absorption.
2. Application Requirements
Before wrapping, make sure the wire surface is clean, dry, and free of oil, dust, wax, or fibers. Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents such as esters (like acetone), ketones (MEK), or naphtha-based solvents, as these can damage the adhesive.
3. Wrapping Methods
Tight Spiral Wrapping: Use ½ or ¼ overlap for full insulation and sealing. Ideal for engine compartment harnesses requiring protection against moisture and abrasion.
Spaced Spiral Wrapping: Maintain gaps of 0.5–2 tape widths between layers, exposing part of the wires. Commonly used for interior harnesses where flexibility and ventilation are important.
Non-Spiral Spaced Wrapping: Apply tape intermittently every 80–200 mm, typically over corrugated protective tubes rather than directly on wires.
4. Wrapping Direction
Always wrap from branch to main trunk. Begin with smaller sub-branches (A, B, C, D) before finishing the main section for a uniform and durable assembly.
Proper tape application ensures your wire harnesses remain secure, insulated, and long-lasting-a small detail that makes a big difference in vehicle performance and safety.
